MICHAEL DEFILLIPPI

How long have you been working in adventure games?

>1 year, just started!

How would you describe your style?

“My focus is always first and foremost on the characters, the narrative, and the interplay between the two; I’m less interested in tightly-balanced combat or ingeniously-devised traps (though both have their place!) and more on memorable character interactions, either with NPCs or between the players themselves. I try to make my games as memorable and fun as possible, which in games like DnD often leads to customized stat blocks so the creatures and characters you encounter aren’t exactly like the ones you’ve experienced dozens of times before in other games.

I also usually try for a good balance between comedy and drama in the games I run – I think the best campaigns are ones where the central focus/purpose has dramatic heft, but the journey contains plenty of humor and shenanigans along the way. (This of course does not count games like Fiasco where the tone – in that case, pure dark comedy – is more or less baked-in to the gameplay!)

I should also note that my style is, by default, very easy-going – if someone wants to do something that isn’t completely covered by the rules, I’ll usually allow it, or at least meet the player halfway, as long as they aren’t ruining others’ fun in the process. That said, if side-discussions and rules-lawyering are causing a session to drag, I won’t hesitate to bring out the “”I’m saying no for now, we’ll discuss it again after the session”” card to make sure everyone stays engaged and keeps having fun.”

What makes you unique as a performer?

I’m always looking for ways to entertain and engage my players. If I stumble across a new technique that I think will lead to interesting RP, I won’t hesitate to bring it to my players. I’m also well-versed in theatre as an actor, director, and even playwright, all skills that come in handy playing characters, corralling players, and writing storylines (and adjusting them on the fly!).

What else should people know about you?

I am neurodivergent (recently diagnosed with ADHD), and happy to work with players to make sure their needs are met to improve their gaming experience.

Dungeons & Dragons 5e, Fiasco, Old World of Darkness, Earthdawn Revised

What apps or software do you use to run your games?
